Chicago Sporting Events

May 4, 2017 | Chicago Event & Entertainment Guide

Chicago is a sports city.

From cross-town rivalries to centuries-old traditions, locals are passionate about their teams. Chicago is one of only four U.S. cities that have major professional teams in baseball, football, basketball, hockey and soccer. No matter the sport, when a major team is a championship contender, you’ll see flags in nearly every window and skyscrapers lit with local colors as the city rallies behind each team. Here's what you need to know about sporting events in Chicago.

Football

The Chicago Bears, or in the local dialect ‘Da Bears’, is the city’s beloved football team. Their home stadium, Soldier Field, is the second-oldest stadium in the NFL. Die-hard fans cherish the Ditka-era glory days, when the team last won the Superbowl in 1985 (and recorded “The Super Bowl Shuffle”). Join the blue and orange frenzy and see why Chicago Bears fans are some of the most dedicated in the NFL.

Baseball

The classic sports rivalry between the White Sox and the Cubs can be traced back to their founding over a century ago. Although the teams are in separate leagues, they regularly face-off in the Crosstown Classic.

Both teams have fluctuated in success over the years, but the White Sox ended an 88-year dry spell when they claimed the World Series Title in 2005. The Cubs had the longest drought in MLB history- 108 years!- fueling the legend that they had been cursed by a bitter fan whose goat was kicked out of Wrigley Field in 1945. But the team had a glorious comeback when they won the pennant in 2016, electrifying the entire city!

Hockey

When the Blackhawks clinched the Stanley cup in 2010 (and again in 2013 and 2015), nearly two million crazed fans showed up for their victory parade. That is the kind of energy you’ll find at a Blackhawks game in the United Center. The roar of the crowd, the quick pace, and the high stakes make these games a must-do on any Chicago bucket list!

Basketball

The Blackhawks share their home in the United Center with the legendary Chicago Bulls. MVPs like Michael Jorden, Scottie Pippen and Derrick Rose are all a part of the Bulls family. Chicago is also home to the Chicago Sky of the WNBA so there are plenty of ways you can be a part of the Chicago bball scene.

Soccer

The Chicago Fire kicked off their first season of Major League Soccer in 1998 with a cup win! Since then, The Fire has drawn big crowds at their home field of Toyota Park in Bridgeview. The Chicago Red Stars also play at Toyota Park for the National Women’s Soccer League. There’s nothing like a crowd going crazy when there’s a goooooooal!
